Six Nations Species at Risk Habitat Inventory
(Aboriginal Funds for Species at Risk)

In addition to the Six Nations Species at Risk Inventory Project, Kayanase has been conducting a Six Nations Species at Risk Habitat Inventory through funds supported by the Aboriginal Funds for Species at Risk. This project has involved an assessment of lands at Six Nations for the presence of habitat which may support various species at risk. The presence of ideal habitat required to support certain species at risk, help to indicate the potential presence of certain species at risk.

The main purpose of the project is to train field assistants and interns to identify species at risk habitat and to educate the community on identification and protection of species at risk habitat. The project also helps to expand and update habitat descriptions and biological records for the largest remaining contiguous block of Carolinian zone forest, which is solely within the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory community. Thus far, we have identified habitat, which potentially supports or has the ability to support:

American Badger
Woodland Vole
Southern Flying Squirrel
Louisiana Waterthrush
Green Dragon
Least Bittern
Hooded Warbler
Blanding’s Turtle
Eastern Ratsnake
Jefferson Salamander
Monarch Butterfly
Butternut
Eastern Flowering Dogwood
Chimney Swift
Northern Map Turtle
Eastern Ribbon Snake
