Six Nations Species at Risk Inventory Project
(Ontario Species at Risk Stewardship Fund)

Kayanase has recently begun a new initiative to conduct a Six Nations Species at Risk Inventory Project for 2008-2009, which is funded through the Ontario Species at Risk Stewardship Fund. The project began in August 2008 and will continue until February 2009. The inventory po this project was conducted during the end of summer and fall months. The inventory involved contacting land owners to gain permission to survey their land and then inviting the land owner to join Kayanase’s Species at Risk Team in a walk around their property to search for species at risk. Various species at risk that were found during this assessment include:

Jefferson Salamander
Monarch Butterfly
Butternut
Eastern Flowering Dogwood
Chimney Swift
Northern Map Turtle
Eastern Ribbon Snake

The purpose of this inventory is to understand which species at risk are present in the community, so that land owners and the community as a whole, can protect these species and their habitat for future generations. We will be continuing our inventory in spring and early summer 2009 to address the species we may have missed seeing last year. If you would like to be involved in this project by providing information about species at risk sightings and/or by giving us permission to survey your land, and if interested, joining us on our walk around it.

Please contact Karen Bomberry at Kayanase’s head office at (519) 445-0013.
