Collecting native seeds to replant is a simple way to help local plants, support wildlife, and grow your own native plant garden. You don’t need much experience to get started, just a little care and attention.
Why Collect Seeds?
Seeds are how plants reproduce. By collecting and planting native seeds, you help preserve local species and support healthy ecosystems. Even small efforts in your backyard can make a difference.
Collecting and planting seeds responsibly helps keep plant life healthy, supports biodiversity by providing food and shelter for wildlife, and ensures the variety of native species in your area is maintained. Even small collections, done carefully, can make a real difference for your garden and the environment.
Best Practices for Native Seed Collection
🌿 Know Your Plants
Only collect seeds from plants you can identify. If you are unsure whether a plant is rare or native, don’t collect it. Reach out to our team when in doubt. We’d love to help!
🌿 Collect Small Amounts
Take no more than 5% of seeds from any one plant. This leaves plenty for wildlife and natural growth.
🌿 Protect the Environment
Avoid stepping on other plants or disturbing the area. Be careful not to spread weeds or diseases.
🌿 Collect from Multiple Plants
Gather seeds from several healthy plants to maintain genetic diversity.
🌿 Keep Records
Note the date, location, and plant type for each collection. This will help you track your seeds and plan future plantings.
🌿 Only Take Seeds
Never dig up whole plants from the wild. Removing plants can harm their populations chance to thrive and can disrupt the local ecosystem. Its best to plant seeds and leave the wildflowers in the wild.
