At Kayanase, our goal is to help transform degraded ecosystems by actively renewing and restoring environmental balance.
We do this by integrating strategic planning, land stewardship, and the protection and re‑establishment of native plants to heal landscapes impacted by habitat loss and degradation. Through this work, we play a vital role in supporting the protection and restoration of local biodiversity.
Our services include ecological consulting and project management, habitat naturalization and native plant gardening, custom seed collection, invasive species management, and ongoing site maintenance and monitoring.
Every seed represents resilience and renewal. Kayanase’s certified seed collection process preserves native biodiversity, supporting robust ecosystems for future generations.
FORECASTING & COLLECTION:
WE IDENTIFY healthy populations and MONITOR their growth stages to determine the best collection times, varying from early spring to late fall.
VIABILITY TESTING & SUSTAINABLE COLLECTION:
WE TEST seeds for quality using in-field methods like cut tests to ensure they are fully developed.
WE COLLECT seeds sustainably, taking no more than 30% and using eco-friendly tools like hand-picking, tarps, and pole pruners.
PROCESSING & STORAGE:
WE STORE seeds temporarily, either in coolers (for moist storage) or on shelves (for dry storage), and PROCESS them based on type—macerating berries or sifting dry seeds.
WE USE float testing to remove debris and non-viable seeds, ensuring only the best quality.
QUALITY CONTROL & TRACKING:
WE ASSIGN each batch a unique lot code for tracking and genetic diversity.
WE STORE seeds in conditions that maintain their specific needs, whether in low humidity airtight containers or in moist settings.
PREPARATION FOR PLANTING:
WE PREPARE seeds with stratification or scarification to break dormancy and ensure readiness for planting in our greenhouse.
With each seed we preserve, we’re cultivating resilience in our ecosystems. Visit Kayanase’s greenhouse to see our impact, or reach out to learn more about native seed collection and production.
Live Staking is one of the ways we help the land heal. By planting cuttings from native species like willow and dogwood along streambanks, we support erosion control habitat restoration, and the return of balance to our ecosystem, Every cutting carries the potential for new life.
Invasive species is an introduced organism that negatively alters its new environment. Common Invasive Species around us would be Phragmites australis and Wild parsnip. If you or someone you know has an invasive species problem, you can ask Kayanase staff to come out and assess the situation and give you their best advice on how to get it removed.
