Welcome to Kayanase, our hidden gem nestled along the Grand River in Southern Ontario. As you step onto our lush grounds, you'll be greeted by breathtaking landscapes and a rich diversity of flora and fauna.
Located in the Six Nations of the Grand River territory, Kayanase is part of the Six Nations Forest, the largest remaining tract of Carolinian Forest in Canada. From the air, it stands out as the largest patch of woodland in Southwestern Ontario.
One standout feature of Kayanase is our small Black Walnut woodlot, where some trees are over 100 years old! Aside from being a sight to behold, these majestic trees are indicative of Carolinian forest habitats and are considered rare in Ontario.
Our Turtle Garden showcases the region's biodiversity, displaying many of our native plants, trees, and shrubs grown at Kayanase – emphasizing the importance of our conservation efforts.
Our property features two yurts and a pavilion with an outdoor kitchen and fire pit. These facilities provide a tranquil retreat where you can immerse yourself in the natural surroundings when you attend our events and workshops. Book an interactive tour to experience our grounds and 1.5 km trail system at Kayanase that runs through our walnut grove, throughout the meadow, and to the Grand River shoreline. Our property is a great place to view all sorts of interesting wildlife, including the threatened bird species Eastern Meadowlark and Bobolink.
Preservation and Partnerships for a Sustainable Future
We are committed to preserving the natural beauty of our region. As part of this commitment, we recently established a naturalized meadow with 1500 tree seedlings planted in 2019 through Forests Ontario’s 50 Million Tree Program. This meadow is intended to serve as a future tree seed orchard. Looking forward, we have plans to undertake ecological restoration activities in the meadow to restore floodplain habitat along the Grand River.
We are also currently in the process of constructing a herbaceous seed orchard, which is expected to be completed in 2024. This orchard will not only provide seeds for propagation in our greenhouse but also seed mixes for restoration projects, as well as mixes available for purchase.
Whether venturing through the walnut grove, observing diverse bird species, or immersing yourself in the tranquillity of nature, Kayanase offers an unforgettable experience. We look forward to welcoming you in the Spring to experience the beauty of nature at Kayanase.
